Description
Date, Time and Venue:
The course will take place on February 12, 9:30 am to 17:00 pm at the EMBL ATC computer training lab.
About the Course:
Computational skills are becoming increasingly important for effective biological research. Many of the systems that are used to perform computational analyses – such as the EMBL compute cluster – run on a Linux operating system and require interaction via the command line. Mac computers also run on a similar architecture, sharing most of the features of Linux environments. An understanding of these environments and the skills and tools required to make use of them, can improve the efficiency of your work and help to prevent errors in your data analysis.
This course will provide an introduction to the most basic UNIX (Linux/Mac OS X) commands and by the end of the course, the participants should be confident and competent in navigating around a Linux filesystem, performing basic file operations and finding help on the command line.
Bio-IT will also provide an intermediate course on command line computing the next day (13th February 2019), which follows up on the material taught here: if you are unfamiliar with the command line, it is strongly recommended that you take this beginners course before attending the intermediate course.
Maximum capacity for the course is 30 participants and registration is required to secure a place.
Course Fee:
EMBL Bio-IT will offer the course for free to all EMBL members.
External participants will be charged with a course fee of 30 Euros (to cover the lunch and infrastructure related cost). The invoice details will be shared via email.
Cancellation and No-Show:
Registration can be canceled free of charge until Friday 8th February 2019.
All participants will be charged a cancellation fee (if canceled after 8th Feb 2019) or no-show fee of 30 Euros. For EMBL members, this charge will be made to their group budget.
